Conclusions
Treatment of schizophrenia should be multifaceted, with antipsychotic therapy at the center. Antipsychotic medications are effective in reducing overall symptoms and risk of relapse; however, currently available antipsychotics do not effectively treat the negative, cognitive, and mood domains of schizophrenia. New pathways and novel receptor targets relevant to glutamate show promise for more effective management of these symptom domains.
